Leon Gaspard (1882–1964)
Born in Vitebsk, Russia (now Belarus), Leon Gaspard studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and traveled extensively through Europe and Asia. After immigrating to the United States in 1916, he settled in Taos, New Mexico, where he became known for his vibrant, richly detailed paintings of markets, festivals, and daily life in remote cultures. Drawing from his own journeys across Siberia, Mongolia, and Central Asia, Gaspard’s work blends Impressionist brushwork with ethnographic observation, capturing the color and movement of people and traditions. Today, his paintings are held in major collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Harwood Museum of Art.
