Henry Augustus Ferguson (American, ca. 1842–1911) was a landscape painter celebrated for his romantic, meticulously detailed depictions of both American and exotic scenes. Born in Glens Falls, New York, he trained in Albany with Homer D. Martin, George Boughton, and sculptors Launt Thompson and Charles Calverly before joining Martin in New York City. His early works of tropical vegetation earned him acclaim, including the sale of City of Santiago for $10,000, a substantial sum in the late 19th century.
A world traveler, Ferguson painted across Europe, Mexico, South America, and Egypt, often venturing into challenging landscapes like the Andes. He also worked in the Hudson River Valley, the White Mountains, and the Berkshires, and was associated with the Hudson River School. In New York City, he maintained a studio for painting and restoration, and was a member of the Century Association and the National Academy of Design. His work remains in public collections, including the Bowdoin College Museum of Art in Maine.
