Henry Boese

(American, active New York, mid-19th century)

Henry Boese was active in New York between 1844 and 1863 and is known for early Hudson River landscapes as well as portrait work. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1847, 1857, 1859, and 1863, including Scene on the Mohawk, shown in the Academy’s 1863 exhibition. Though little is known about his life, Boese is documented in period exhibition records and early artist dictionaries, and his work reflects the formative years of American landscape painting centered on the Hudson River Valley.
