Robert Duncan (born 1952)

Born in Salt Lake City, Robert Duncan settled in Midway, Utah, in 1976 and established himself as a representational oil painter of the American West. Drawing from his upbringing on family ranches in Wyoming’s Green River region, his work captures the rhythms of rural life through scenes of cowboys, wildlife, and everyday moments set within expansive mountain landscapes, often in winter.

Duncan studied at the University of Utah before pursuing painting full time, further refining his approach under artists John Clymer, Robert Lougheed, and Edward Fraughton. His work balances narrative detail with a strong sense of place, reflecting both lived experience and observation.

In 1982, he became the youngest artist elected to the Cowboy Artists of America, earning Oil Painting Awards in 1984 and 1985. Though he later left the organization, Duncan has continued to focus on themes of ranching and western life throughout his career.
