Gerald Harvey Jones (1933-2017)

Born in San Antonio, Texas, Gerald Harvey grew up immersed in the stories of the American West, his grandfather being a trail boss during the cattle-driving era. These early influences, combined with the rugged landscape of central Texas, became the foundation of his artistic vision.

After graduating cum laude in fine arts from North Texas State University, Harvey briefly pursued a career in teaching before committing fully to painting in 1963. His work evolved from early depictions of the Texas Hill Country to a broader exploration of American life, from frontier scenes to atmospheric city streets. Often compared in mood to Édouard Cortès, Harvey is known for his romanticized urban scenes—rain-slick streets, glowing lights, and evocative glimpses of a bygone era.

His work is held in major museum, corporate, and private collections, including those of U.S. presidents and the Smithsonian Institution, which commissioned him to paint The Smithsonian Dream for its 150th anniversary.
