Carl Hirschberg

(American, 1854-1923)

Carl Hirschberg was born in Berlin in 1854.  After coming to New York, he apprenticed as a wood engraver, but gave it up to study drawing at the National Academy of Design.  He became one of the original members of the Art Students League.  He became a genre and figure painter as well as an illustrator.  Eventually, he settled in Kent, Connecticut.

ASL; Ecole des Beaux Arts, with Cabanel; Acad. Julian, Paris with Lefebvre.

Member:

Salmagundi Cl. (founder).

Exhibited:

NAD, 1885-93; Boston AC, 1887-91; PAFA, 1887.
