Tony Robert Klitz (1917-2000) was an Impressionist-style urban cityscape painter born in Southport and educated at Bishop Wordsworth School in Salisbury before studying painting and drawing at Cheltenham Art College from 1936 to 1939. Trained also as an architect, he served in the War, rising to the rank of Major, and moved to London in 1950. There he painted alongside Australian artist Hayward Veal and began exhibiting his work, earning early critical praise for his restrained color and sensitive response to the London scene, particularly its distinctive pearly light.
Klitz later settled in Ireland, where he lived and worked for much of his life, holding his final solo exhibitions at the Davis Gallery in Dublin before his death in 2000. A prolific painter, he specialized in London cityscapes, military ceremonies, and river views, bringing architectural precision and a subtle palette to his compositions.
