About Mark Daly: Painter of Timeless Memories

Mark Daly is a contemporary American painter whose oil paintings explore light, movement, and memorable moments across cityscapes, coastal harbors, and beaches. His work seeks to capture timeless impressions of place and the people within it.

Although Daly began his professional painting career later in life, his foundation in visual art reaches back to childhood. Raised on Long Island, he was introduced to drawing at an early age by his mother and later refined his understanding of composition and design under the guidance of Woodhull B. Young, curator of the Vanderbilt Museum.

For much of his adult life, Daly pursued music and business. A nationally recognized mandolinist and composer, he has performed widely and remains a Voting Member of the Recording Academy. His experience in music informs his approach to painting; the orchestration of shapes, values, color, edges, brushwork, and harmony mirrors the structure of musical composition.

Years of entrepreneurial leadership instilled a focus on clarity of idea and continual refinement. He maintains a detailed painting diary, approaching each canvas as both a finished work and a step forward in growth.

Daly’s painting and music are connected by the same human instincts: observation, memory, movement, rhythm, color, and craft.

Since committing professionally to painting in 2010, Daly has earned national recognition and is a Signature Member of Oil Painters of America (OPA), the American Impressionist Society (AIS), and the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA). His work has been featured in national juried exhibitions and major competitions and is represented by select galleries.

Working from his own field studies and reference material, Daly seeks clarity of design, honesty of values, and a sense of movement through energetic brushwork that draws viewers into the memory of a place — whether a city animated by flags, luminous sails on open water, or families gathered along the shore.

Purpose

I paint to preserve the light, movement, and rhythm of moments worth remembering.
