John F. Tennant (1796-1872) was a British painter known for his genre scenes, landscapes, and coastal views. Largely self-taught, he nevertheless benefited from instruction by the artist William Anderson, which helped refine his early technique.
Tennant began his career painting historical genre scenes inspired by the novels of Sir Walter Scott, but he soon turned his attention to landscape painting, the field for which he is best remembered. He exhibited widely throughout his career, becoming a member of the Suffolk Street Society in 1842, and showing regularly at the Royal Academy between 1820 and 1867, as well as at the British Institution and the New Watercolour Society.
He spent much of his life in Devon and Wales, regions whose scenery strongly influenced his work.
