Warren Sheppard (American, 1858-1937) was a marine painter, yacht designer, and navigator born in Greenwich, New Jersey. The son of a sea captain, he made many voyages with his father, developing firsthand knowledge of ships that informed his detailed and accurate depictions of yachts and maritime scenes. He studied perspective at Cooper Union in New York City and trained under Dutch marine artist Mauritz de Haas, later traveling to Europe to sketch Mediterranean ports and paint canal scenes in Venice.
Sheppard sailed extensively along the New England coast, capturing harbors and waters from New Jersey to Maine, and became known for his precise renderings of the most lavish yachts of his day. He also authored Practical Navigation, used by the United States Naval Academy. Sheppard continued painting until his death in Brooklyn, New York, in 1937.
