Ray Swanson (1937–2004)

Ray Swanson was a celebrated painter of the American Southwest, best known for his sensitive and luminous portrayals of Navajo, Hopi, Zuni, and Apache life. Raised on a farm in South Dakota, he developed an early interest in art and later studied engineering before turning to painting full time.

A pivotal visit to a Navajo reservation in the early 1960s shaped the course of his career, inspiring decades of work centered on Native American subjects. Swanson’s paintings, often featuring children, animals, and richly detailed traditional dress, are noted for their dramatic light, vibrant color, and deep sense of respect for his subjects.

Settling in Carefree, Arizona, he worked in both oil and watercolor, documenting cultures and traditions he believed were rapidly changing. A member and later president of the Cowboy Artists of America, as well as a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, Swanson received numerous honors, including Arizona Artist of the Year in 1979. His work remains widely collected for its warmth, dignity, and spiritual resonance.
