Amelia Brown Sprague (1870–1951)

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Amelia Brown Sprague began her artistic career at Rookwood Pottery in 1887 at the age of seventeen. She remained with Rookwood until 1903, decorating primarily Standard Glaze wares and becoming known for her use of richly applied under-slip decoration.

Sprague later studied at the Pratt Institute in New York and pursued a career as an artist and educator. During the 1920s, she taught at Buffalo State Teachers College and was also associated with the Berkshire Summer School of Art in Massachusetts. Known particularly for her spring and summer landscapes, she spent her later years between Versailles, New York, and Lawrence, Kansas, where she died in 1951. She is buried at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati.
