Fred Pye (1882–1964)
Fred Pye was born in Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire, England, and received formal training in Paris at the Académie Julian and the Académie Colarossi. Early in his career, he exhibited in Paris, where the French government purchased his painting Mer Agiteo for the Musée du Luxembourg. After immigrating to the United States, Pye lived and worked in several cities including Cincinnati, Des Moines, and New York before settling in Ogunquit, Maine, where he served as artist-in-residence at the Cliff House. Known for his expressive coastal scenes, rugged shorelines, and atmospheric light, Pye built a reputation as a skilled painter of marine subjects and dramatic seascapes. He continued to paint throughout his life until his death in Ogunquit in 1964.
