William Rickarby Miller (1818–1893) Staindrop, England – New York, USA
Painter and illustrator known for intimate, narrative-driven landscapes and portraits, especially in watercolor. Trained by his father and in London, Miller emigrated to the U.S. in 1845, settling first in Buffalo and later in New York City. His early work for the American Art Union and illustrated publications supported his career while he captured the upstate New York landscape.
A disciplined and prolific artist, Miller exhibited at the National Academy of Design and produced hundreds of watercolors, oils, and sketches. Although his life ended in relative seclusion after separating from his family, his work remains celebrated for its detail and storytelling quality. Collections include the New York Historical Society.
