Peter Moran (1841–1914)

Bolton, England – Philadelphia

Painter, etcher, and lithographer known for landscapes, animal scenes, and depictions of the American West. The youngest of four Moran brothers including Edward and Thomas Moran, he trained with his siblings and was influenced by Rosa Bonheur and Constant Troyon.

Based in Philadelphia with his wife, Emily Kelley, also a painter and etcher, Moran worked in theater scenery and focused on Pennsylvania landscapes and animal studies. From 1864 onward, he traveled extensively in the West, documenting New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and Wyoming, including ethnological studies of Native American communities. Notable journeys include accompanying Thomas Moran to the Grand Tetons in 1879 and visiting Indian pueblos with Captain Bourke in 1881.
