Edmund Darch Lewis (1835–1910)

Edmund Darch Lewis was a highly sought-after American artist best known for his luminous marine watercolors and landscapes. Based in Philadelphia, he studied for five years under Paul Weber and first exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1854, later showing at the National Academy of Design in New York and the Boston Athenaeum.

Lewis focused on the Philadelphia, New York, and New England regions, with particular attention to the Delaware Water Gap in western New Jersey. His keen vision and remarkable productivity, sometimes producing up to three paintings a day, made his work immensely popular, at times outselling all other American painters. One of the most financially successful artists of the nineteenth century, Lewis was also known later in life for his impressive collections of furniture and Chinese porcelains.
