Robert Atkinson Fox (1860–1935) was a highly prolific Philadelphia-based artist whose work reached millions of American homes in the early 20th century through color photo-lithographic prints. Born in Toronto, Canada, Fox immigrated to the United States between 1885 and 1890 and enjoyed remarkable commercial success, producing more than 1,000 works. He studied in Canada and Europe, was a pupil of J.W. Bridgeman at the Ontario Society of Artists, and exhibited at the Philadelphia Art Club in 1898. Fox worked extensively for major publishers including Brown & Bigelow, Edward Gross & Co., and The Thomas D. Murphy Company, with his imagery appearing on calendars, postcards, magazine covers, advertising pieces, children’s books, and numerous household items.
A versatile generalist, Fox painted many themes including landscapes alongside enchanted gardens, cottages, animals, Western scenes, historical figures, and idealized women. Often working from memory and sketches, he could complete paintings in a single day, many executed in oil on canvas.
Fox married Anna Gaffney in 1903. They lived in New Jersey until about 1924, when he moved his family to Chicago and continued his work until his death in 1935 at the age of 74.
