The Berlin landscape painter Paul Flickel was initially apprenticed to his grandfather Carl Gropius and later studied in Weimar and Düsseldorf. In his paintings, he specialized in the realistic and extremely detailed depiction of lighting moods and effects. He found his motifs on his annual study trips, which took him not only to the Mark Brandenburg, but also to Austria, Italy and the Baltic Sea. In 1894, he was appointed professor at the Berlin Academy of Arts.
