Gabriel Godard (1933–2023) was a French painter born in Delouze-Rosières, Lorraine, who began his artistic career in 1950 with figurative work before transitioning fully to abstraction in the mid-1980s. Associated with the broad tradition of the École de Paris, Godard developed a distinctive visual language rooted in personal experience rather than formal movements. His work was widely exhibited, earned numerous awards, and was acquired by major French institutions, including the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Centre Pompidou.
Godard’s abstract paintings reflect an “inner landscape,” drawing inspiration from nature’s constant transformation and the emotional undercurrents of lived experience. Difficult to categorize and fiercely independent, he sought to unite visible reality with hidden truths, capturing subtle emotions through color, rhythm, and form. His works are held in private collections throughout Europe, the United States, Japan, and the Middle East. Godard remained active late into life and died in France in 2023 at the age of 90.
