Sara Caswell-Pearce is a Cincinnati-based collage artist, printer and graphic designer. She attended Rutgers University for her undergraduate and graduate degrees, and received chef training at The Restaurant School (Philadelphia).
After careers in public relations, libraries, restaurants, and journalism, she switched direction again to become a full-time, professional artist. She is the founder and owner of Paper With a Past.
Her passion is for finding antique images, and helping them tell a new story via complex, layered collages in which she combines original antique illustrations and ephemera with hand-painted backgrounds, hand-pulled prints, handmade paper and hand-cut paper.
Her work is generally narrative, with a feminist slant and a wicked sense of humor. For this exhibition, she was inspired by the changing seasons, and the idea of garden parties and garden dresses.
Her work has been shown at Art Academy of Cincinnati, Contemporary Arts Center (Cincinnati), KMAC Museum (Louisville), Mount Saint Joseph University, University of Cincinnati, Manifest Gallery, The Carnegie, Weston Art Gallery, YWCA Women’s Art Gallery, and is in the collection of the University of Cincinnati’s School of Medicine. Her work is also part of the traveling exhibitions “Tripletta” and “Still They Persist,” which are touring the country now.
In fall of 2017, she exhibited outside the country for the first time as part of a group exhibit in Havana, Cuba. In summer of 2016, “Remnants,” her first solo museum exhibition, opened at the Loveland (CO) Museum of Art. In 2015, she was awarded an Aid to Individual Artists Grant by Summerfair Cincinnati.
She is the co-author of Harper Ever After: The Early Work of Charlie and Edie Harper (Pomegranate Art Books, 2015) and a contributing artist/writer to the monthly magazine “Movers & Makers Cincinnati.”
