Anna M. Valentien
(American, 1862-1947)
Anna Valentien was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1862. She was a well-known sculptor, ceramist, painter, and teacher. She was a part of the staff at Rookwood Potteries, in Cincinnati, from 1884 to 1905. She married artist Albert Valentien in 1887 and settled in San Diego in 1908. While there, the couple established the Valentien Pottery Company. Anna Valentien was an instrumental figure in the development of the Arts and Crafts Movement in San Diego. She also taught at the San Diego Normal School (1914-16), H.S. (1917-38). She died in 1947.
