Eugén Klinckenberg was born in the Netherlands in 1858.  He studied at the Dusseldorf Academy under Albert Baur and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Brussels as a student of Charles Verlat.   He also served as the director there.  After settling in Munich, he co-founded the Munich Secession, whose exhibitions he judged.  In 1903 he was appointed to the Städtische Kunstgewerbeschule in Aachen where he was the head of painting and drawing classes.  His students there included poster artist Jupp Wiertz, animal painter Heinrich Linzen, as well as Ewald Matare and Heinz Heinrichs.  After leaving the school, he opened a private painting and drawing school in his studio in Aachen.  He died in 1942.
